Wayne Lee Wheat “Butch”, a lifelong resident of Dayton, Ohio, was born June 23, 1943 to the late William James and Thelma Wheat. Wayne departed this life Tuesday, June 11, 2024 at his residence with his wife by his side.
Wayne was a graduate of Roosevelt High School class of 1961. Wayne announced very early in life his aspiration to serve the community as a funeral director. He attended Central State University. After graduating from Cincinnati School of Mortuary Science in 1965, he served his apprenticeship under the guidance of the late C. Joseph McLin, Sr.
Building on his passion and desire to serve the community, Wayne opened the House of Wheat Funeral Home located at 106 N. Williams Street in September of 1969. Through his hard work and perseverance, he then relocated to the current location on N. Gettysburg Avenue in January of 1989. Wayne’s charismatic personality coupled with his solid business sense made him a driving force in the success of the House of Wheat Funeral Home. He was a perfectionist and a master of detail. He was a pillar in the community and always helped those in need thoughtfully, selflessly, and without question. Wayne was a mentor and provided guidance to many in and out of his profession. His professionalism and class were shown and continues to show through the service provided by the House of Wheat Funeral Home. Wayne set the highest standard for funeral service nationally and his continuing legacy is carried on through the hard work and dedication of his sons and present staff at the House of Wheat Funeral Home.
Preceded in death by his parents, William James and Thelma Wheat; brother, William “PeeWee” Wheat; sister, Saundra Veal.
Wayne leaves to cherish his memory and continue his legacy, his loving and devoted wife of 58 years, Dorothy J. Wheat; sons, Wayne Anthony (Anh) Wheat, William Stacey Wheat; grandchildren, Shayla Nikkole, William Stacey II, Wayne Anthony II “Chip”, Simone Ry’Anh, London James, and Rain Harper Wheat; nephews, Clarence Melvin (Sharon) Reed Jr., Ralph (Mikaa) Veal III; niece, Gina Brooks (Jearld Keaton); great nephews, Clarence M. Reed III and Ralph X. Veal; great nieces, Mickelle and Morgan Veal; along with a host of other relatives and close friends.
Wayne was a devoted husband, caring father, and loving grandfather who was affectionately known as “Pawpaw”. He was an entrepreneur, philanthropist, and role model. He has touched and impacted the lives of many through his thoughtfulness and caring spirit. His presence will be truly missed.
Funeral service 12 pm Friday, June 21, 2024 at Phillips Temple Church, 3620 Shiloh Spring Road, Trotwood, Ohio. Visitation 9 am- 12 pm. Family will receive friends 10 am- 12 pm. Entombment Woodland Cemetery.
