Tommy Lee Hodge, affectionally known as “Mr. Tommy,” was born in Opelika, Alabama on April 17, 1944, to the late Mr. Homer Jackson Sr. and Ms. Emma Line Hodge. He transitioned peacefully to be with the Lord at the Dayton VA Lakeside Manor Hospice in Dayton, Ohio on Monday May 22, 2023.
Tommy graduated High School and was immediately drafted into the United States Army. He was a proud veteran and served in the Vietnam War, where he valued his service highly and attained the rank of Specialist (E-4). Upon his departure of the military, he received an honorable discharge for his service and was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, two Overseas Bars Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, status of Expert for M-14, Good Conduct Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and the Presidential Unit Citation for extraordinary heroism in action against an armed enemy. After his military career, he worked as an Electrician in the city of Dayton for over 30 years.
On March 12, 1973, Tommy married the love of his life, Ava Ellington and recently they celebrated 50 years of marriage. Tommy was a faithful member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where he served as a Church Greeter and Usher. He enjoyed helping others and was always known to be a great friend to many people. He also enjoyed spending time with his great grandchildren, traveling, and his favorite baseball team, the Cincinnati Reds.
Tommy was preceded in death by his father Mr. Homer Jackson Sr., mother Ms. Emma Line Hodge, and brother Homer Jackson Jr.
Tommy leaves to cherish the memories of his blessed life: his loving wife Ava Hodge, bother Henry Hodge, Opelika, AL, stepdaughter Carolyn (Keith) Moore, stepson Chris Hill, granddaughters Saravia, Erdericka, great-grandchildren Vincent, Vinavia, and Khalid; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who all adore and love him dearly.
Funeral service 11 am Thursday, June 1, 2023, at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 380 S. Broadway Street, Dayton, OH. Visitation 9 am- 11 am. Family will receive friends 10 am- 11 am. Interment 9 am Friday, June 2nd at Dayton National Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to House of Wheat Funeral Home.
