SIDNEY PERU HAYES, SR., born May 5, 1934, the third child and oldest son of Callum and Hildra (Cook) Hayes, went home to be with the Lord December 20, 2020. He was born in Calhoun, Alabama and resided in Dayton, Ohio for over fifty years.
Sidney accepted the Lord early in life at Big Union Christian Church and graduated from Calhoun High School before being drafted in the Army in 1954. He entered into blessed union with Onell Joyce (Williams) on April 5, 1958 and their union was blessed with four children, seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Sidney, Onell, and their four children travelled the country as a military family until retiring in Dayton, Oh. He served his country again as a Federal Protection Officer for over 20 years and served as a Deacon at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church for more than 40 years.
A good and faithful servant to the Lord, his family, and country, Sidney leaves a legacy of hard work, commitment, and service to his family, friends and all who knew him. He was known for his rendition of Amazing Grace when he led devotionals, his unique mix of traditional values and progressive skills, and wore a hat like no one else could.
Sidney was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Onell, his parents Callum and Hildra Hayes, and his sister Ruby (Marvin) Smith.
Sidney’s legacy will be carried on by his three sons, Sidney P. Hayes, Jr (Valerie), Kenneth Hayes, and Dennis Hayes (Chevelle) of Dayton, Ohio and his daughter, Denise Hayes, of Cincinnati, Ohio; his grandchildren, Ciera, Tiarra, John, Amber, Sasha, Bishop, and Justin; great-grandchildren, Ambrianna, Nikyah, Darius, Marely, Peyton, Kylie, Chase, and Neriayh; brothers and sisters Bernice Hayes, Beatrice Simmons (Fletcher), Tessie Rudolph, Earlene Logan (Sidney), Donald Hayes (Bernice), Carol Pellam (Charles), Maggie Ruth Kuhnast, and Clyde Hayes; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
