Surrounded by family and friends, Roger L. Smith Jr., aged 56, departed this life on October 26, 2024. Born on December 30, 1967, Roger was a beloved son, brother, father, and friend whose passion for culinary arts brought joy to many.
Roger was a proud graduate of Patterson High School, class of 1986, where he first discovered his love for cooking. He learned to appreciate the art of cuisine while enjoying countless hours in the kitchen alongside his mother, who taught him cherished family recipes and the joy of creating memorable meals. Following high school, he pursued his dream at culinary school, honing his skills and igniting a lifelong dedication to the culinary traditions that would define his career.
For 35 years, Roger excelled in various kitchens around the Dayton area, becoming a staple in the local dining scene. In addition to his local endeavors, Roger also went on to cook in kitchens around the United States. Known for his creativity and attention to detail, he transformed simple ingredients into memorable meals, winning him a few culinary awards and leaving an indelible mark on the hearts and palates of all who had the pleasure of experiencing his culinary creations.
Beyond his professional achievements, Roger was known for his infectious laughter, generous spirit, and unwavering kindness. He was a mentor to many aspiring chefs, sharing his knowledge and igniting passion in others. His warmth and genuine love for people extended beyond the kitchen, as he cherished time spent with family and friends.
Roger is survived by his loving parents, Roger and Kathy Smith; his brothers, Chad (Adonica) and Antonio Smith; his beloved children, Roger (Michelle) and Amber Smith and their mother, Carla Seay(Courts); his former wife, Yolanda Smith; his adored stepchildren, William, Eric, Erica, and Tremaine Neal; along with numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, cousins, and a host of grandchildren and cherished friends.
Roger’s spirit and passion for life will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on through the love he shared and the flavors he created.
Funeral service 12 pm Wednesday, November 6, 2024 at House of Wheat Funeral Home, 2107 N. Gettysburg Ave., Dayton, OH. Visitation 10 am- 12 pm. Family will receive friends 11 am- 12 pm. Interment Jeffersonview Cemetery.
