Robert Walter Smith Sr.

Robert Walter Smith Sr., age 76, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, September 15, 2023. He was born in Dayton, Ohio, to the late Buffus and Vaddie L. (Varner)Smith Sr., on January 5, 1947.

Robert was a retired millwright from Bayer Auto Group, formerly the Chrysler Corporation. Robert had a passion for music. One could often find him humming a variety of tunes as well as singing in the church choir. He was an avid Cleveland Browns fan and was known to play a great game of backgammon and chess. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents; son, Rodney Sumlin (Monica); six sisters, Anna Ramsey, Helen Sampson, Sarah Wilson, Willa Mae Smith, Earlene Bonner, Marcia Ludd; two brothers, Buffus Smith Jr. and Richard Smith.

To cherish his memory, he leaves his devoted wife of 56 years, Darlene Smith; children, Sonovia (James) Jamerson, Sharloris (Paul) Coleman, Robert Smith Jr.; nine grandchildren, four great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Celebration of life 12 pm Wednesday, September 27, 2023, at House of Wheat Funeral Home, 2107 N. Gettysburg Avenue, Dayton, Ohio. Visitation 10 am-12 pm. Family will receive friends 11 am- 12 pm.
