It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Richard Arnold Tyson, age 85, who departed this life on Thursday, January 23, 2025 at Dayton VA Medical Center surrounded by his immediate family.
Richard was born February 25, 1939, in Johnstown, PA, and was the fifth of ten children to the late Cleophus Sr. and Annie Lois Tyson. In 1943 the Tyson family moved to Youngstown, Ohio where Richard graduated from North High School. After high school he enrolled in Youngstown State University where he studied course work in medicine. Richard later enlisted in the United States Army in 1961 where he served as a medic.
Following his tenure in the military, Richard became a master plasterer working with his brothers. He also worked with his nephews at Big G Construction Company. Later Richard moved to Washington DC and worked for the United Sates Postal Service. He moved back to Youngstown, Ohio and later reconnected with his childhood sweetheart Florence. Richard and Florence Tyson were married in 1991. He and Florence loved going to church, movies, traveling and spending time with family. Richard lived with purpose and faith. Family was always at the heart of Richard’s life including his special relationships with his sister Carolyn Tyson and niece Sydne Hope.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Julian Tyson; daughter, Stephanie Smith Albert; brothers, Cleophus Tyson Jr., Nathaniel Tyson, Bishop James E. Tyson and Jonathan Tyson; sister, Joyce Haynesworth.
He leaves to cherish his memory loving wife, Florence Tyson; sons, Mark Tyson, Everett Smith Jr.; daughters, Jeannette (Coutney) Travis, Jeannine (Derrick) Pippins, Tanisha (Eric) Means; sisters, Carolyn Tyson, Jackie (Joe) Hope, Christine (Dr. Leonard) Scott, and Cleopatra Oates; granddaughters, Leigha (Elijah) Donelson, Madison Smith Marshall; host of great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, cousins, family members and loyal friends.
Rest in peace, dear husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, you will forever be loved and never forgotten.
Funeral service 12 pm Saturday, February 1, 2025 at House of Wheat Funeral Home, 2107 N. Gettysburg Ave., Dayton, OH. Visitation 10 am- 12 pm. Family will receive friends 11 am- 12 pm.
