Rev. Dr. James Thomas Beasley Jr., Ph.D., 78, of Elgin, IL, transitioned to heaven Sunday, October 8, 2023, surrounded by loved ones.
He was born on October 26, 1944, to James T. Beasley, Sr. and Frances Baker in New Albany, IN. He was adopted by his paternal Aunt Carrie and Uncle William Christy.
Dr. James T. Beasley Jr. had an extensive academic education earning a bachelor’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) where he was a distance runner setting several track and field records. He also earned master’s degrees from University of Louisville and Friends University and a doctorate degree from the University of Denver.
He married Yvonne Leyte Ballew on December 21, 1968, and together they had two children, Marcus and Jonathan.
He worked as a professor in the School of Social Work at Colorado State University and as the Director of the Council on Aging for the city of Denver. In 1985, Dr. James T. Beasley Jr. accepted the call to Pastor at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Wichita, KS. He served as Pastor for 18 years.
In 1986, he was inducted into the Hall of Distinguished Alumni at EKU in in recognition of seventeen years of exemplary work in social work, education, corrections, mental health, and local government.
Upon his retirement in 2002, James and Yvonne relocated to Carmel, IN where he continued to serve in the ministry as interim pastor for churches affiliated with the American Baptist Convention in Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky.
He was preceded in death by his adoptive parents, William and Carrie Christy; mother, Frances Shelley; sister, Sandra Maddox; and brother, Michael Buchanan.
Dr. James T. Beasley Jr. is survived by his wife, Yvonne Beasley; his sons and their wives, Marcus and Ericka Beasley and Jonathan and Rebecca Beasley; siblings, Yvonne Cole, Victoria Beasley, Bruce Beasley, Terry Beasley, and Nancy Buchanan; sister-in-law, Lena Dillingham; grandchildren, Lena Beasley, Natalie Beasley, Campbell Beasley and Brandon Beasley.
Funeral services 10 a.m. Friday, October 20, 2023, at Woodland Mausoleum Chapel, 118 Woodland Ave Dayton, OH. Visitation 9 a.m. at which time family will receive friends. Rev. Dale Williams, Assistant Pastor New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Wichita, KS officiating. Arrangements entrusted to House of Wheat Funeral Home, Inc.
