Rev. Dr. Asa G. Browning Jr. was born June 6, 1934 in Social Circle, Georgia. His parents, Asa G. Browning Sr. and Carrie Pace Browning were excited to welcome their only child. He was dearly loved by both, especially his mother. His parents moved to Dayton, Ohio when he was nine years old. Rev. Browning remained a resident until his death on January 10, 2024.
Rev. Browning was previously married and to their union they shared four children: Asa III, Artrenia, Stranton and Michelle Browning. Later in 1985, he married his present wife Nancy Dixon Peters Browning who had two children: Chad and Robin Peters. They shared a lovely, blended family.
Rev. Browning attended Dayton Public Schools and received his GED while serving in the United States Army. He had a desire for learning and that lead him to attend Cedarville College, where received his Bachelor of Arts. He also received two MA degrees from the United Theological Seminary and a MA in Counseling from The University of Dayton. If that was not enough, he continued his journey in learning and received a PHD in Bible from Christian Bible University. He was a licensed cosmetologist. He was also a Charter Member of Prince Hall Unity 115 Lodge in Dayton, Ohio.
He retired from General Motors after over 30 years of service as an Attendance Counselor. He also severed as the first black Chaplain at the Miami Valley Hospital for many years.
Rev. Browning has been a member of MT. Enon Missionary Baptist Church for over sixty years. He served under the pastorate of Rev. Thomas D. Howard, Rev. John F. Cunningham, Rev. Dr. Harold Cottom, and presently serves as the senior Associate Minister under Pastor Cory J Pruitt.
Teaching and Preaching the Word of GOD has always been his passion while at Mt. Enon. He taught locally in our district and state. Dr. Browning also taught schools certified by the National Baptist Sunday School Publishing Board. He served as Dean in the Northwestern District Association and the Ohio Baptist General Convention. He was State Director of Christian Education in the O.B.G.C. (Ohio Baptist General Convention). He was also Dean of Christian Education.
During his service at Mt. Enon, he served as: Associate Minister, Assistant to Pastor, Interim Pastor, Saturday Bible Study Class Director, Senior Associate Minister, Director of Christian Education, Dean of Christian Education, Sunday School Teacher. Rev Browning was the recipient of the Mt. Enon Heritage Service Award. He also served in the following auxiliaries: Official Board, Ministry Support Group, Board of Trustees, Bible Class, Laymen, Church School Teacher, Baptist Training Union (BTU) Ministry, Prison Outreach, Fellowship Ministry, Good Samaritan Circle, Mobile Ministry, Mt. Enonites Bowling League, Nurture Baptist Churches.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son Asa III, and a daughter, Artrenia.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving and devoted wife Nancy, two sons, Stranton (Veronica) Browning and Chad Peters (Columbus, OH), two daughters, Michelle Bloodsaw (Sacramento, CA) and Robin (Martin) Rucker, daughter in love, Ulicia Woods, devoted cousin/sister Maxine Rutledge, brother and sister in laws, Rubin Dixon Jr., Donald Dixon, Charles (Connie) Dixon, Richard (Judy) Dixon all of Dayton, Ohio. A host of loving grand and great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, Mt. Enon church family, and other family and friends.
Visitation 9 am- 11 am Friday, January 19, 2024 at Mt. Enon Missionary Baptist Church, 1501 W. Third Street, Dayton, Ohio. Family will receive friends 10 am- 11 am. Funeral service begins at 11 am. Interment 10 am Monday, January 22, 2024 at Dayton National Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to House of Wheat Funeral Home, Inc.
