Nora Marie Downey, a devout Christian woman whose unwavering faith and boundless love touched the lives of many, passed away on August 21st, 2023. She was born on January 5th, 1949, in Bourbon County, Paris, Kentucky, and lived her entire life in Dayton, Ohio.
Nora's life was a testament to her deep and abiding devotion to the Lord. She was a cherished member of Freedom Hill Bible Church, led by Reverend Terry Hill, Sr. In the embrace of her church family, Nora found solace and joy, particularly in her participation in the choir. Her soulful singing enriched the congregation's worship experience and uplifted hearts. Family gatherings were a cherished tradition for Nora. She relished in attending events, spending quality time with her loved ones, and creating lasting memories.
Nora was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Wallace E. Downey, whose memory she cherished. She was also preceded by her mother, Fannie Mae Hamilton, and father, Joseph O. Jones. She joins her sisters, Geraldine Harris, Victoria L. Berry and Sister in Christ (Annette Evans) her brothers, Richard Hamilton and Norman J. Jones, in eternal peace.
Left to treasure her memory are her sisters: Carolyn E. Hamilton, Margaret L. Jones-Harris (John), Deborra L. Jones, Marilyn J. Mitchell (Michael), Alicia M. Jones, Reinette Jones; and brothers: Kenneth Jones (Teresa), Clinton A. Jones (Tanya), and Malvin Jones (Marsha). Nora Marie Downey leaves behind four adoring children, Angel M. Hamilton, Anthony W. Hamilton, Melvin F. Higgins, Jr. (Shani) and Celina M. Davis, whose lives she enriched with her loving heart, wisdom and extreme kindness.
Nora's legacy continues in the generations she adored. She leaves behind 12 grandchildren Antonio R. Hamilton, DeAngelo R. Hamilton, Mario D. Hamilton, Melvin F. Higgins, III., Catina L. Davis, Emilio M. Hamilton, Anthony W. Hamilton, Jr. Ashley L. Hamilton, BreOna P. Higgins, Treyvion L. Higgins, Gabriel S. Higgins, Noah W. Higgins, 18 great-grandchildren and a host of dearly beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, beloved neighbors and dear friends. Nora was and always will be a testament of the love she poured into her family and her spirit of warmth and compassion extended beyond bloodlines, touching the multitudes.
Nora Marie Downey's life was a song of devotion, love, and faith. Her unwavering commitment to her church, her family, and her community has left an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to have known her. As she joins her loved ones who have gone before her, we celebrate a life well-lived and a soul that has found its eternal rest.
Funeral service 1:00 pm Friday, September 1, 2023, at House of Wheat Funeral Home, 2107 N. Gettysburg Avenue, Dayton, Ohio. Visitation 11 am- 1pm. Family will receive friends 12pm- 1pm. Interment 9 am Tuesday, September 5, 2023, at Dayton National Cemetery. 4400 W. Third Street, Dayton, Ohio.
