Mattie V Mathews

Mattie Jovita (Vaughn) Mathews, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones on April 9, 2023.  She was 87 years old.  Mattie was born to the late Marley Vaughn and Mildred (Hurd) Vaughn on August 9, 1935 in Lima, Ohio.  She graduated from Dunbar High School class of 1953 and worked as an administrative assistance for 30 years at Wright Patterson Air Force Base while raising her two sons.  She played the role of mother and father in a time when that was not common.  Despite these struggles, she always provided a loving and warm home for her sons.  The love, compassion, and her passion to help others were exemplified by the endless support yhat she provided to her children, family, and friends.  In her spare time, Mattie enjoyed spending time whit her family, listening to gospel music, and watching movies.  She was a devoted mother, daughter, and sister.  She accepted Christ as her Savor at an early age and attended Greater Allen AME Church where she served as a nurse guild and choir member.

She is preceded in death by her father, Marley Vaughn; mother, Mildred Hurd Vaughn; sister, Marlene Thompson; and son Michael Alan Mathews.  She leaves to cherish her memory, a loving and devoted son, Stephen LeRoy Mathews of Dayton, OH; a devoted brother in law, Jack Thompson of Dayton, OH; stepson, Jeffrey (Theresa) Delaney of Hyattsville, MD; 3 stepdaughters, Pamela (Willie) Peay of Augusta, GA, Jacqueline (Michael) Davis of Dayton, OH, and Erica Mathews of McDonough, GA; one granddaughter, Tamika Angelina Mathews of Daytona Beach, FL; nieces, Karen Thompson of Lakeland, MI, Jacqueline Thompson of Des Moines, IA;  nephews, Philip Thompson of Ottumwa, IA, Jack (Jay) Thompson of Cincinnati, OH; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral service 11 am Thursday, April 20, 2023, at House of Wheat Funeral Home, 2107 N. Gettysburg Avenue, Dayton, OH. Visitation 9 am- 11 am. Family will receive friends 10 am- 11 am. (Mask Required.)
