Marie Sims Obituary

Marie Sims, our sister, aunt, godmother, and friend, entered this life March 22, 1950 in Jackson County, Georgia, and was called to her heavenly home June 19, 2021. Marie was the seventh of nine children born to Katie Mae and Robert Sims. She graduated from Glenwood High School, Winder, Georgia, Class of 1968. She went on to further her education and obtain an Associate Degree in Dayton, Ohio.

Marie was an executive assistant at Kettering Foundation in Dayton, Ohio where she had been employed since December of 1985 and worked faithfully for over 35 years, until her passing. At an early age, she joined Greater Barber Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Statham, GA where she was very instrumental in the organization of the music ministry, the youth ministry and the missionary department. She helped to mold the minds and lives of many youths in her native Barrow County, Georgia community and continued to do so even after relocating to Dayton. Although she never gave birth to any children, she was the next-best-thing to a birth mother for many of her nieces, nephews and godchildren. Being a caring and loving soul, Marie did not hesitate when it came to providing care, assistance and support for others, especially the sick and the elderly in her Dayton community and in her native hometown of Statham, GA.

Marie was preceded in death by her father, Robert Sims; mother, Katie Mae Kilgore Sims; soul mate, Roscoe Simmons; brothers, Curtis and Bobby Sims; sisters, Pearlie Thurmond and Mary Stevens.

She leaves to cherish the memories of her blessed life, her brothers, Billy Sims (Karen), Statham, GA and Joe Dickens, Gainesville, GA; sisters, Evelyn Harrison, Dayton, OH, Grace McGuire and Levonia Brown, Statham, GA; brothers-in-law, Willie Pete Thurmond, Statham, GA, and Dozier Stevens, Athens, GA; a host of nieces, nephews, godchildren, cousins and friends who all adore and love her dearly.
