Marc DeWitt Obituary

Marc LaVance DeWitt was born April 26, 1975 to Peggy L. Davidson and the late Jere I. DeWitt. The most resolute of three brothers, Marc showed strength and resilience from an early age. Throughout his life, Marc prioritized his faith, his family, and his artistic expression. This was demonstrated by his being the first in his family to make a public confession of faith and join the Maranatha Christian Fellowship. It was at Maranatha where Marc stepped into one of his callings and joined the Voices of Joy through which he was able to bring people closer to Christ. It was through this artistic expression and with Central State University choir that Marc was able to bring joy to audiences in not only Ohio, Michigan, New York and California, but also the United Kingdom, France, and even Egypt.

Marc attained degrees from Central State University and the American College of Education. Having experienced his own unique journey, Marc was a lifelong advocate for others in education. This was embodied by his many roles over the years in higher education and non-profit organizations where he had the opportunity to pour into the lives of hundreds of young men and women, many of whom have credited Marc with their success. He was also a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha, Fraternity Inc.

Whether for work or vacation, Marc loved the open road with the journey from Ohio to Memphis being one of his most traveled routes. More than anything, Marc loved his family. He looked forward to the annual family reunions wherever they may be so that he could regale distant relatives with stories and pictures of his five sons whom he was very proud of. His baritone voice and infectious laughter permeated every room that he was in. He had a passion for connecting and a memory for people’s stories and details that made him a consummate connector and influencer. There were still so many more of his stories to be told.

Marc was preceded in death by his father, Jere I. DeWitt; uncles, Rex M. DeWitt and Lester Davidson; and nephew, Caleb Michael DeWitt.

He is survived by his mother, Peggy Lee Davidson; partner, Erica Fields; sons, SaVon, Ethan, Caden, Landon, and Nathan; brothers Nathan DeWitt (Joanne) and Jeremy DeWitt (Stephanie); sister, Kim Blackledge (Charles); four special aunts Rosalind Madlock, Michelle Cooper, Erica Hooks, and Tracie Daniels; a host of nieces, nephews, great aunts, uncles, cousins, and too many friends to count.
