M.C. Adolphus McGuire Jr. (affectionately known as “Mickey”) was born to the late M.C. Adolphus McGuire Sr. and Nellie Kate (Roseberry) McGuire on January 18, 1941, in Dayton, Ohio. He is the 7th of The Baker’s Dozen. He received Christ at an early age and was baptized at the Tabernacle Baptist Church under The Reverand Dr. J. Welby Broaddus.
M.C. attended Willard Elementary school and Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School.
Growing up on Melba Street, and Playing baseball at different parks, Burkham and Triangle, just to name a couple, leaves great memories for many. As a teenager MC played with men’s amateur baseball teams and excelled beyond his years and to the amazement of those that recognized his talent. Ted Mills and Blinky Morgan knew that MC (Mickey) had a promising future.
While at Dunbar he excelled as an All-around athlete. He starred at the Quarterback position in football and played 5 years at point guard position in basketball. Gaining “All-City” accolades in both sports. He is a pioneer. MC was the first All-City Black Quarterback in Montgomery County.
He graduated High School with the Class of 1959, where he and his High School sweetheart served as class Vice president (MC) and President (Betty). He was also inducted into the Dunbar High Scholl Hall of Fame.
MC was the first Black, from Dayton, Ohio, to be drafted by Major League Baseball, by the Baltimore Orioles, soon after High School. He enjoyed great years playing in the organization with Frank Robinson, Mark Belanger, and back up to the great Hall of Famer, Brooks Robinson, and under the coaching of Earl Weaver. MC “Mickey” enjoyed great years in AAA with the Rochester Red Wings as a standout and an All-Star. He later played for the Tucson Toros, of the Chicago White Sox organization, and eventually ended his career after the season in 1974, after 15 years of Professional Baseball, while playing in Japan for the Hiroshima Carps, where he was a standout infielder.
After returning home, MC finished college at Central State University (CSU Marauders) and obtained his Insurance License. Working for Equitable Life and Metropolitan Life, MC introduced the importance of Life Insurance to the community he loved, and it was a great blessing to many families. He truly believed in empowering people. While in the insurance workforce, he excelled as well. He was a top seller year after year, affording his family to annual free vacations; and while at Metropolitan Life Insurance, he gained membership of the “Millionaires Club” often, by being a top seller of policies. MC concluded his employment working for the Montgomery County Treasurer’s Office, under Willis Blackshear.
MC also spent his time coaching the sport he loved. His coaching journey included Wright State University with Ron Nishcwitz, Central State University Head Coach, Dunbar High School (as an assistant), Miami Valley School Head Coach, and he spent endless hours training and developing ball players at First Dayton Little League and at the Ted Mills Baseball Academy. He was also the head coach of Mickey’s Braves of the DABC, which he helped to develop and coach several young future Professional ball players, while they continued to excel in league play year after year. MC is now an iconic member of the esteemed Dayton Baseball Hall of Fame, and the Louisville Slugger Museum Wall of Fame, with his autographed Louisville Slugger baseball bat. MC also held a VP position with the IBL Dayton Jets (Basketball) in 2005, who went on to the IBL Championship game in its first season.
MC led his family in Worship as a Christian Believer. He was a member of Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, along with his entire family. He sang in the Tabernacle Spirituals mass choir and with the male chorus. M.C. was an ordained Deacon and served on the Finance Committee under the late Pastor Dr. Donald W. Thompson Sr.
MC also continued to support and take care of his wife, Betty, until she obtained her wings on July 10, 1996. He was an incredible father. Nurturing both sons with love and Christian values, MC was able to witness them both evolve: Myron Christopher as a High School Hall of Famer (Chaminade), college graduate, husband, father, coach, mentor, and Entrepreneur: and Mark Cameron as a Bishop of The Lord’s Church, Pastor, husband, father, and community activist. In 2006 MC became a member at St. Paul Global Outreach Ministries, under the Pastorate of Bishop Dr. Mark C. McGuire, Sr. He became a Deacon and helped the church thrive and grow, and eventually emerge as The Potter’s House-Dayton International Ministries, where he remained as a member. Both sons stood by his side as he stood by theirs until God decided that MC had fought the Good Fight, finished his course and his departure was at hand.
MC was remarried to his current widow, Mrs. Dora (Hamrick) McGuire.
On October 19, 2025, he went home to be with the Lord.
