Lucille Warren Obituary

Lucille Virginia Samuels was born in Elkton, KY. She was the only child of Virginia Edmonds and Tony Ed Samuels, both of whom preceded her in death. She is also preceded in death by her former spouses and good friends, Vincent Warren, John Jones, and Clark Beck. She is survived by her son Edward (Joan) Warren, and her grandchildren, Danielle Warren and Edward Warren Jr.

Lucille graduated from Todd County (KY) High School in 1955, where she was active in student council and was a cheerleader. She went on to complete her baccalaureate degree at Kentucky State College, where she was voted Miss Kentucky State in 1958, and pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Beta Zeta Chapter. She graduated from Kentucky State in 1959 with a B.S. in Commercial Teacher’s Education. After graduation, she married Vincent (Van) Warren, and moved to Dayton in 1959, where their son Eddie was born. She began work as a secretary at Inland Company where she was employed for two years, before beginning her true calling as a professional educator at Jackson Elementary School directly across the street. She went on to earn her master’s degree in education administration at Xavier University in Cincinnati, OH.

She was a life-long learner and educator, retiring from Dayton Public Schools after teaching at Jackson Elementary School for 25 years. She went on to teach at and retire from Sinclair Community College where she taught Developmental Studies and served as the Chairperson of the Developmental Studies department. She was a Kellogg Fellow at Northwestern University in Chicago, IL, and was the first Black female President of the Toastmasters Club of Dayton Ohio.

Lucille led a vibrant and adventurous life that included world travel, membership in the African American Ski Club, the Dayton Contract Bridge Association, Cub Scout Pack Leader, several Bowling Leagues, the Kentucky State University Dayton Alumni Association, Beta Eta Omega Graduate Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, and very active membership in her beloved Bethel Missionary Baptist Church of Dayton, OH. She was known to visit a casino or two, she played tennis, painted, went white-water rafting, snow skiing, and she was an irreplaceable family leader in organizing reunions.

She is warmly remembered among her family and friends as a funny, friendly, generous, kind, and a steadfast mother, grandmother, cousin, and friend who left them with enough memories for a lifetime!
