Leon Murphy, 88, of Dayton, Ohio, gracefully took flight and received his wings on May 16, 2024. Born on April 25, 1936, in Brewton, Alabama, he was one of six children born to Theodore and Mattie Murphy.
Upon graduating from high school, Leon, at the tender age of 18, migrated from his hometown in Alabama to join his sister in Dayton, Ohio. He initially undertook various jobs before dedicating himself to Delphi Chassis, where he enjoyed a fulfilling career and retired after 30 years of commendable service.
Leon embraced his faith in Jesus Christ early in life, becoming a member of Second Saints Siloam Missionary Baptist Church in Brewton, Alabama. After relocating to Dayton, he joined St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church and later became an important part of Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church, serving as a Deacon for over 20 years. Eventually, he and his wife, Beverly, united with Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church, where he continued his deaconship until illness prevented him from attending worship services. Leon's devotion to his faith was unwavering, evident in his regular attendance at weekly services, Bible study, and prayer meetings. His presence was a constant whenever the church doors were open.
In 1981, Leon met the love of his life, Beverly J. Faircloth, and they were united in marriage in 1983. From the inception of their relationship and throughout their marriage, Leon epitomized the perfect gentleman and a devoted husband. He ensured Beverly never lacked anything, and they were inseparable companions. Leon's passion for travel was boundless, and he cherished every moment spent exploring all 52 states and 32 countries with Beverly by his side. He loved playing the game of golf and in his earlier years, enjoyed playing softball as well.
Leon was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Elizabeth Billingsley, and brother, Theodore Murphy. He leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion, cherished by his beloved wife, Beverly; one daughter, Diana Murphy; one son, David Murphy; two grandchildren, Arrikha Meyer and Tyler Murphy; three sisters, Mary Walton, Margaret Ann Stallworth of Spring, TX, and Rebecca Cooper of Houston, TX; three sisters-in-law, Dorothy James, Mary (Steve) Coaston of Cincinnati, OH, and Glenda Drake; one brother-in-law, Gary R. (Rebecca) Faircloth; two bonus sons and daughters, Clarence and Sandi Taylor, and Rev. Leiland and Melanie Woods; two bonus grandchildren, Sydney and Clarence Taylor III; dear friends, Albert and Beverly Cochran and Harold and Brenda Smith.
Leon’s memory will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. His life was a testament to his faith, love, and unwavering devotion to his family and church.
