Joyce Rush Hunt Obituary

Joyce Maton Rush Hunt, the youngest child of Reverend James C. Rush and Mrs. Greta V. Board Rush was born on Monday, January 23, 1933, in Laurinburg, NC.  Joyce was called home on Monday, March 10, 2025, after a steady decline in health, an extremely tired body, and the loss of verbalization. She was surrounded by her family members who prayed over her during her transition.  As the group ended their prayer and spoke the word "Amen", she took her last breath. Joyce knew she was loved during her last moments.

Joyce attended public schools in several cities across North Carolina before graduating from Atkins High School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.  Joyce continued her education and graduated from Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education.

Joyce followed her sister Miriam Brown to relocate to Dayton, Ohio, where she met and married Mr. Edward Rucker.  After the marriage ended, they remained friends.  She later met the love of her life, Mr. Walter Hunt. They married in Indiana but returned to make Dayton their home.

For many years Joyce taught in Dayton Public Schools where she retired.  She was a dedicated teacher giving her all to make sure each student succeeded in their studies.  Joyce taught both 4th and 5th grade students.   Her opening statement each year to her students was, “Don’t try nothing on me because I know the habits of rabbits!”  She Loved her students.

Joyce was a faithful member of Phillips Temple CME church before her health began to decline.  She was a member of the Red Hat Society of Dayton.  Joyce loved playing her baby grand piano, shopping, and eating.   Joyce’s answer to the call was preceded by her beloved husband Walter Hunt, her parents Reverend and Mrs. J.C. Rush, brothers James Rhynehardt, James Bristol, Donald Elwood, sisters Izola Ruth, Miriam Elizabeth, grandparents, uncles, and aunts.

Joyce’s answer to the call leaves yet another empty space that cannot be filled.  She leaves to celebrate her life and to cherish memories, sister Ouida Rush Scarborough-Hodnett of Greensboro, North Carolina; nephews, Leonard William Cobbs Jr. of Cleveland, Ohio, James Bristol Rush Jr. (Vivian), Michael Grant Rush (Winnie) both of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, William Redmond Scarborough Jr. of Greensboro, North Carolina, Darryl L.
