Joyce Shenette Kates, age 48, was born to Lyndell and Peggie McDonald on June 3,1976 in Dayton Ohio. Joyce attended Meadowdale Elementary, Fairport Middle School and Meadowdale High School where she graduated in 1994. Joyce continued her studies in early childhood education at Sinclair Community College and was employed at Miami Valley Child Development Center. Joyce had a love for children, she was a natural nurturer. In 2003 Joyce heard the call of God on her life. She would often testify how she heard the call of God while on the dance floor at a nightclub.
Joyce began her spiritual journey here at Bethesda Temple Apostolic Church. She was obedient to the call and was baptized in the name of Jesus for the remission of sins and filled with the gift of the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in other tongues as the Spirit of God gives the utterance, her life was forever changed from that day forward. Joyce became a new creature in Christ Jesus, “old things are passed away BEHOLD! all things are become new”. Joyce served as Summer Camp Youth Counselor, Church Choir Member, and served with the Young People Department while at Bethesda Temple.
In 2005 Joyce was employed by Choices in Community Living in Dayton Ohio as an Residential Specialist and Home Health Aide, where she worked with patients with special needs. Joyce married Michael Kates in 2007 and to this union, three beautiful children were born and raised in the admonition of the Lord. Joyce was led to continue her spiritual journey at New Covenant Apostolic Church where she served as Youth Sunday School Teacher, Church Recording Secretary, Choir Member, Member of the Church Board Committee and of course cook. Joyce was known for her delicious macaroni and cheese, Veggie Lasagna, potato salad and those awesome sweet potato and key lime pies, and the list goes on and on.
In 2013 Joyce was employed at Sycamore Glen Rehabilitation Center in Miamisburg Ohio as a Certified Nursing Assistant. In 2014 She was employed at Liberty Tax Service as a Tax preparer and Customer Service Representative. In 2019 Joyce continued her education at Ultimate Medical Academy where she obtained her Associate of Science Degree in Medical Billing and Coding and was employed at Farmers Insurance Company when she was called Home to be with the Lord, Joyce will be greatly missed and never forgotten.
Joyce was a beautiful person, a devoted Wife, Mother and Church Member. Joyce had a deep love for family and friends gatherings, she had a way of bringing them together. Joyce was serious and held steady to her Belief in God, she was strong and firm yet harmless as a dove.
Joyce S. Kates was preceded in death by her parents, Lyndell and Peggie McDonald; one brother, Ronald McDonald; and one sister, Shewonna Barnes.
She leaves to cherish her memory husband of 17 years, Michael Kates; three beautiful children, Joy Lynn, Daniel and Matthew Kates; her bonus children, Nicole, Michael Jr. and Gabriel Kates; grandchildren, Zachary, Za Miya, Zi'Asia, Anthony and Ryan Kates; brothers, Bryant McDonald; Craig Barnes (Sheila ), Ruben, Steve, and Lyndell McDonald Jr.; sisters, Tonie Coleman (Tony) and Stacey Jones; special families, Airycka Estremera & family, Jane Banks & family, Siedah "Tina" Buckley & family, Tish Davis & family, Tavari Priest & family, Kiara Williams & family, Angelina Jackson & family; a host of nieces, nephews & cousins; Mother Mary Floyd; Pastor Timothy, Lady Bonnie, Bethany and Kyle Hawkins; the entire New Covenant Apostolic Church Family of Dayton Ohio as well as the Bethesda Temple Apostolic Church Family of Dayton Ohio and a host of beloved relatives and friends. “Earth has no sorrow that Heaven cannot Heal”
Funeral service 12 pm Tuesday, December 3, 2024 at Bethesda Temple, 3701 Salem Avenue, Dayton, OH. Visitation 11 am- 12 pm at which time family will receive friends. Interment Shiloh Park Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to House of Wheat Funeral Home.
