John W. Wardell, age 85, left this world on August 10, 2022, after a lengthy illness, at the V. A. Hospice, Dayton, Ohio, surrounded by loving family. John was born in Georges Township, Pennsylvania to Minnie Lewis Wardell and George Wardell. Upon graduation from Georges Township High School, he enlisted in the Air Force where he travelled the world. John also attended Central Michigan University. He retired as a TSgt with the Air Force and retired at WPAFB as a logistician.
John was an avid community activist in various capacities. He was a member of various masonic organizations including Amer Temple #107 and Unity Lodge #115. He held memberships in the Duplicate Bridge Club, NAACP, and the National Democratic Party, where he served on the Obama and other presidential campaigns. He even ran for Dayton City Commission at one time. He was a member of Mt. Moriah M. B. Church, Dayton, where he was an emeritus usher, and a former member of the Mt. Pisgah Church, Dayton.
John was preceded in death by his parents and 6 siblings.
He leaves behind his brothers, Donald Wardell, Baltimore MD and William Wardell, Uniontown PA; nephew, Wendall Wardell (Zola), Clarksdale, TN; stepdaughter, Felecia Isaac (Bobby), Englewood, OH; and step grandsons, Brandon Isaac, Englewood, OH and Jaron Isaac, Dallas, TX; best friends, William Arrington (Mary), Charlottesville, VA, Arlin Jackson, Xenia, OH, James Scott, Washington Twp, OH, Marvin Williams and his dearest friend and caregiver, Carol and her family of Dayton and numerous other friends .
Masonic service will be held 6 pm Sunday, August 21, at the House of Wheat Funeral Home, Inc., 2107 N. Gettysburg Ave. Funeral service 11 am Monday, August 22, at Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, 301 Mia Ave.; this service will also be live streamed. Link: www.facebook.com/Stream-All-Services-102620271622310/ Family will receive friends 10-11 am. (Mask Required at Each Service). Interment Dayton National Cemetery. A special thank you is extended to the VA Hospice Team who were diligent in caring for John.
