Jean Carmen (Gaines) Hawkins, went home to be with the Lord at the age of 84, on Monday, May 3, 2021. Jean was born December 15, 1936 in Frankfort, Kentucky, the second child of Wm. Jack and Carmen Ercell (Allen) Gaines. She was educated in public schools; Mayo Underwood, Frankfort, KY and Central High School, Louisville, KY. She was baptized at a young age in the Greenhill Baptist Church where she attended faithfully prior to the move to Dayton, Ohio.
Jean Hawkins worked as an Administrative Secretary at a number of private agencies prior to her employment with Montgomery County Children Services, the Dayton Board of Education and later, the City of Dayton from which she retired. Jean was a faithful member of Macedonia Baptist Church and served on the Usher Board
Ms. Jean, as she was affectionately called, touched many lives and will be missed by all who were fortunate to be in her life circle. She was united in holy matrimony to James W. Hawkins for over 60 years prior to his passing. She was a devoted wife, sister, loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Wm. Jack and Carmen Ercell (Allen) Gaines; husband, James W. Hawkins Sr.; sisters, Mary C. (Gaines) Pope, Louisville Ky, Shirley A. (Gaines) Carr, Chicago, IL; and brother, David Gaines, Frankfort, Ky.
She leaves to cherish her memory, sister, Jeanette Williams, Dayton; brother-in law, John Hawkins, Washington DC; children, Deborha Million, Ercell Hawkins Vaughn and James W. Hawkins Jr., all of Dayton; granddaughters, Toyan Million and Grecia Vaughn, one great granddaughter, Naemah Nzeruem and devoted friend, Beverly Williams, along with a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and sorrowing friends.
Walk-through visitation 10 am-12 noon Tuesday, May 11, at the House of Wheat Funeral Home, Inc., 2107 N. Gettysburg Ave. Private Service. Interment Dayton National Cemetery.
