Jacqueline Evonda "Jackie" Mays-Shelton was born to the late Reverend Andrew A. and Lula B. Mays in Dayton, Ohio. She accepted Christ at the age of nine and was baptized by her father at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Dayton, Ohio. Jackie began her career as a civil servant in Dayton and accepted a promotion that required her to move to Detroit, Michigan. She ultimately retired after 42 years from the US Army Tank Automotive Command as Chief of the Tele-Communications Department.
Jackie joined Hartford Memorial Baptist Church and was an active member of the Board of Trustees, Hartford Women United, Social Justice, and the May Birth Month Ministries. She was also affiliated with Prince Hall for many years joining Deborah Chapter #33 Order of the Eastern Star, Charity Assembly #38 Order of the Golden Circle, and Marracci Court #32 Daughter of Isis where she was a past Commandress.
Jackie departed this life on Friday, August 4, 2023, at 7:15 am. She was preceded in death by her parents and nine siblings.
Enduring to treasure her life and legacy are her nieces and nephews, Loretta, Bruce (Susan), Michael, and Stephanie (Terrance); her great-nieces and nephews Tosha, Courtney (Rahman), Summer, Justin, and Ashley (Alfred), a host of great-great nieces and nephews as well as her special friend group, the “A-Team", and other close friends.
Graveside service 9 am Tuesday, August 15, 2023, at West Memory Gardens, 6722 Hemple Rd. Moraine, Ohio. Arrangements entrusted to HOUSE OF WHEAT Funeral Home.
