Gregory Allen Webster, Sr., was born January 4, 1938 to Clifton Allen Webster and Katherine “Hudson” Webster in Hamilton, OH. He departed this life on January 14, 2022 at Miami Valley Hospital surrounded by his family. Gregory was the oldest of six children. He was baptized in Catholic faith at an early age, and later became a member of St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church. Gregory attended Hamilton Catholic Schools. He was the first black man to graduate from Hamilton Catholic High School in 1957. He later moved to Dayton, OH in 1964.
Gregory was one of the founding members of the Ohio Players, former leader and drummer from 1964-1973. He was often requested to perform with various other artists. His donated drum sets can be seen at The Funk Center of Dayton and Central State University. He gave great service to the City of Dayton, Good Samaritan Hospital, JC Penny and his favorite Walmart. He was an avid sports fan of the Cincinnati Reds, Cincinnati Bengals and Ohio State Buckeyes.
Gregory was preceded in death by his parents, Clifton A. Webster and Katherine “Hudson” Webster; siblings, Clifton M. Webster, Jr., Lynn C. Smith and Darenda Farrell; father-in-law, Oscar E. Fletcher, Sr., mother-in-law, Johnnie L. Fletcher; brother-in-law, Oscar E. Fletcher, Jr.; and grandchildren, Doug Byrd and Shante’Autry.
Gregory leaves to cherish his memories, wife of 29 years Janet Fletcher Webster, siblings, Jacques Webster Glover of Dayton, OH William (Billy) Webster of Cincinnati, OH and Author Lee Lovett (Rosie) of Bosier City, LA; children, Keturah D. Gipson (Douglas), Sanona D. Stewart, Gregory A.
Webster, Jr. (Debra), Adellar R. Webster, Juan E. Webster, Sr. (Everly) all of Dayton, OH, Keith A. Webster, Miami, FL, Nicholas D. Webster (Nina) of Knoxville, TN, and Renita L. Channels of Dayton, OH; adopted children, Kelvin J. Autry and Rhonda L. Wade both of Dayton, OH; sisters-in-law, Christine Stephens, Cheryl Fletcher and Teresia Smith (Danny, Sr.) all of Dayton, OH; brothers-in-law, Everett James Fletcher (Gwen) of Dayton, OH and Fred Sullivan (Tine) of Barnesville, GA; 36 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Special thanks to his wife Janet Webster for her unconditional love and support she provided to him after his accident in 2016. She did a wonderful job and he greatly appreciated it. Also to the wonderful healthcare workers Sanona Stewart, Sasha Spencer, Mitchell Webster and Ms. Judy.
Memorial mass 10:30 am Saturday, February 5, at St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church, 519 Liscum Dr. (Semi-private, Mask Required). Calling hours 9:30-10:30 am.
