Ernest Alfonso Gray was born on August 31, 1942, in Annapolis, Maryland, to Mary “Sally” Gray and Harvey Chew. He departed this life Friday, October 24, 2025.
He spent his early years in Annapolis, MD, where he attended Bates High School and developed a lifelong appreciation for family and community. Afterwards he worked at the Officer’s Club at the United States Naval Academy and Sanitation Department for the city of Annapolis.
Ernest’s life took a new direction when he relocated to Dayton, Ohio with his mother and sister. It was there that he built lasting relationships and began his career. He married Linda Crowder and together they shared a devoted partnership through sickness and health.
Ernest was a dedicated and hardworking man who served for many years at Rink’s Department Store as Receiving Manager. More notably, whilst employed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, he worked through Reid Janitorial Service and Stanley Brooks Janitorial Service. His commitment to excellence and quiet strength earned him the respect of all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his son, Timothy Gray; mother, Mary Gray; sister, Margaret Eaton; wife, Linda Crowder; nephew, Timothy Eaton; and best friend, Charles Cooper.
Ernest leaves to cherish his memory his son, Brandon Gray of Virginia Beach, Virginia; and his niece, Lynne Washington of Atlanta, Georgia; along with extended family members and friends who will remember him for his warmth, humility, and steadfast love.
Ernest’s life was marked by perseverance, dignity, and care for those around him. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. A gentle soul whose warmth will be missed but never forgotten.
