We celebrate the life of Elvira Montgomery, age 78, born to Square Harris and Leona Swan Harris December 15, 1944, in Bellemy Alabama. She went home to be with the Lord September 5, 2023. Elvira attended Alabama A & M, Central State University and University of Dayton where she completed her master’s degree. As an Educator Elvira taught in Anniston Public Schools and Dayton Public Schools where she retired. Her life was dedicated to being a strong advocate in her community, an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Inc, as well as supporting Dayton Public Schools Athletics and Activities in her retirement. She held strong traditions, heritage, and faith as a member of Bold Believers Church and actively supported her community. Elvira’s bright smile will dearly be missed by all.
She was preceded in death by father, Square Harris; mother, Leona Swan Harris; son, Steve Montgomery; brothers, Hoover Swan, Judge Harris, and Theotis Harris.
Her legacy is survived by brother Joe Connie (Etta) Harris; son, Thomas Arnold (Sami) Montgomery; lifelong friend and father of children, Thomas Lee Montgomery; 3 granddaughters, Shawnte’ Cragg, Cameo (Nyjah) Maat, and Jaalah Montgomery; grandson, Eden Montgomery; as well as many family members of the Montgomery, Shaw, Ricks, Harris, and Swan families.
Funeral service 12 pm Friday, September 15, 2023, at House of Wheat Funeral Home, 2107 N. Gettysburg Avenue, Dayton, Ohio. Visitation 10 am- 12 pm. Family will receive friends 11 am- 12 pm. Interment Forest Hills Memorial Gardens.
