Elijah Berman Obituary

It is with shattered hearts and profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Elijah Dae Berman. Elijah was born in Dayton, Ohio on February 21, 2008, and was unexpectedly taken from us on June 24, 2025, at the tender age of 17. The devastating motorcycle accident has sent shockwaves throughout the entire community.

Throughout his time in Dayton, Elijah attended DECA Prep, DECA Middle, and Chaminade Julienne Catholic High School, where he was a Senior. Elijah was the light of his family’s life – a son who brought pride, joy, and endless love to those who knew him. A gifted student, and natural leader, he excelled in the classroom and as an athlete. He participated in a host of sports teams in his lifetime, including flag football, soccer, basketball, wrestling, baseball, and football.

He played his entire Pee Wee football career with Meadowdale Lions, where he learned the sport and fell in love with the game. From a young age, we knew that Elijah was special. As he grew into a young man, football became more than just a pastime, it was his life. From camps to college tours, Elijah traveled to universities all over the country, working on his craft, and seeking what every high school athlete desires - a college scholarship. Elijah was blessed to earn 13 division 1 scholarship offers. After his official visits were completed, he knew that Eastern Michigan University was home. He verbally committed to their football program as a Defensive Tackle and was proud and excited to be an Eagle. Elijah passed away 8 days later.

Beyond his athletic talent and academic achievements, Elijah was known for the kindness he extended to everyone around him. He was a mentor to his peers, a source of encouragement to younger students, and a beloved member of the community. He was an Eagle Ambassador, participated in the Chaminade Julienne Little Sibs program, and coached Powder Puff football. His big heart, infectious smile, and genuine warmth left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Elijah loved friendly competition, whether it was cornhole, ping pong, shadow boxing, or shooting dice. He loved making friendly bets on everything. Elijah enjoyed fishing, fast cars,  spicy foods, and being in the water. He loved music, vanilla scented candles, Chipotle, and shopping for the latest fashions. Elijah had an extensive cologne collection, always making sure he smelled good for the ladies. You could find him hanging with his best friends, having intense SplatRBall wars, and going to parties. With Elijah, there was never a dull moment. He had his motorcycle license, completed the motorcycle safety course, and was proud of his Suzuki V-strom. Elijah wanted to study business in college and become a real estate agent, while also flipping houses. He had dreams of being a father, and playing in the National Football League.

In 17 years, Elijah has impacted more lives than some people will in their entire lifetime.

Elijah is survived by his mother, Heather Berman. Father, La’Maine Simmons (Nayiasha Taylor). Siblings, Keith West Jr, Kamya Simmons, La’Maine Simmons Jr, and Nalaya Simmons. Grandmother Lynda Hampton (David Hampton), Grandmother Barbara Branigan, Grandfather Roger Simmons, Auntie Latasha Simmons, Uncle Ta’veon Rogers, Cousins Antonio Higgins Jr, Trinitee Higgins, and Destynee Higgins.  He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Harvey Berman.

Although Elijah’s physical presence may no longer grace our lives, his spirit will continue to inspire and uplift us. May his memory be a blessing, and may we carry forth his legacy of love and compassion in all that we do. ‍
