Dorothea Murphy Obituary

Dorothea Murphy “Evangelist Murphy", age 97, born January 19, 1924, transitioned to be with the Lord Friday, June 18, 2021 at her residence in Dayton, Ohio. She was born in Franklin County, North Carolina to the late Ira Austin (father) and the late Mamie Yarborough (mother). She attended school in North Carolina, after graduation she later moved to Dayton in the late 40’s.

Dorothea gave her life to Christ at an early age, she loved the Lord and served him with gladness of heart. She raised her children in the fear and admonition of Lord. She had a heart for Missions and Community Outreach programs. Dorothea fed the poor at many food banks, gave clothes to those in need, visited the sick and shut in from time to time. She later acknowledged her calling to preach the gospel and became a licensed Evangelist running revivals throughout various States. Dorothea did not like a dry church service, she would always say: “Oh no, we came out to praise the Lord, if we don’t, the rocks will cry out, let everything that hath breath praise the Lord.” Also, no one could play a tambourine like her. She loved to shout and praise the Lord.

She has a large family and always looked forward to attending Family Reunions. Dorothea was an excellent cook and known for her collard greens, potato salad and most of all her sweet potato pies. She loved her family and devoted her life to serving the Lord.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Ira and Mamie; husbands, George Singleton, Sr., Edward Norris Sr., and Willie Murphy; son, Sherman Singleton; siblings, Vivian, Marie and George Yarborough, Lysenia Thorn, Rodella Bryant, Philistine Fraiser; granddaughter, Stephanie Spicer; best friend, Della York.

She leaves to cherish her memory, sons, Lawrence Singleton, George Singleton Sr. (Denise), Edward Earl Norris Sr.; brother, Clevan Yarborough; sister, Lillian Evans; grandchildren, Jerrod, Kendra, Marcus, Wandra, George Jr., Jason and Jennifer Singleton, Bridgette Byrd, Edward Earl Norris Jr., Kim and Shree Norris; Goddaughter, Dorothy Mitchell; great grandchildren, Mikey Jr., Brianna, Kenia, Jasmine, Joselyn, Jaelyn, Joshua, Azmar, Tyrae, Edward Norris-(Shon), Elijah and Micaiah Dorosey; great-great grandchildren, Karter, and Elisha; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
