Derek Lynn Bolds, Sr., was called home May 12, 2022, at the age of 61, after fighting a phenomenal battle with cancer.
Derek was born December 20, 1960, in Dayton, Ohio, to the late Roscoe Russell Freeman and Betty Jean Bolds. He graduated in 1979 from Fairview High School where he played football and ran track. While in high school, Derek enlisted into the U. S. Army where he served as a 76V10 material storage and handling specialist.
While a resident of Honolulu, Hawaii, he competed in and taught Kempo for over 40 years. Of his many security jobs, he worked as job security for the Hyatt hotel where he built close bonds of friendship, like a second family.
Derek’s amazing will to live surpassed the doctors’ expectations. His love for his family and friends kept him going and he fought to the very end. He will be remembered for his infectious smile, determination and will power. To his close friends he will forever be their “Sensei”.
