When Davida Deatrice Prater was born to Lula Mae Shyne and David Alexander Thompson on January 3, 1962, the world got a lot brighter, and a whole lot louder.
Davida was joy personified. Her laugh entered the room before she did. When she smiled, the world smiled with her. The sun itself dimmed in her light.
She would, of course, attribute this to her faith; her unshakeable belief in Jesus was reflected in the care with which she attended her patients, in the steadfastness with which she served her church, and in the love that she poured into her family.
So it goes without saying that when she took her place at her Lord and Savior’s side on March 24, 2025, the world grew quieter in the absence of her laughter. And if the sun shone brighter, it was not because she was gone, but because it no longer had to compete with the intensity of her light.
Davida is survived by her girls, Christa R. Prater and Starr L. Prater, whom she loved only a little less than Jesus. Additionally, she is survived by her siblings, Linda Thompson and James Thompson, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and aunties who love her dearly. Included among them are LaPaul Thompson, LaKita Matthews, Sheri Thompson, Frances Sims, and Daisy Johnson.
Ever true to her nature, Davida requested donations of TeeTurtle Reversible Octopus Plushies, so that they might accompany the patients of Dayton Children’s as they embark on their journeys with cancer.
