Charles Spann, Jr. Obituary

Charles “Charlie” Spann, was born January 13, 1960 in Rembert, South Carolina to the late Lucille Provard and Paul Spann. Charles graduated from Hillcrest High School in 1979 where he was a star football player. After graduation, he attended both Mesa College and Central State University where he also played football. Charles worked as a counselor at the Green County Juvenile Detention Center for 28 years. He was a highly respected employee who positively impacted the lives of many incarcerated youth until his retirement in 2017.

In August 1991, Charles married Toni Hill, who preceded him in death in March of 2010. To this union, two children were born, Charlee and John Paul. After years of being single, Charles found love again, and on August 18, 2017, he married his “LOVE” Barbara Johnson.

Charles was a sports enthusiast and an avid Michigan fan. He was a “news junkie”, who kept himself and others informed. In recent years he enjoyed spending time on Facebook, voicing his comments, love and concerns. Charles also had a sense of humor. Recently he posted that Michael B. Jordan stole his title of “Sexiest Man Alive” and that he wanted a recount. Charles was a gentle giant who loved God and his family. He was a kind, loving, dedicated husband, father and friend that had a HUGE heart. Those attributes were greatly influenced by the guidance given from his paternal grandparents, the late Thomas and Ora Spann; uncle, Thomas “Doc” Spann and aunts, Ella Dawson, and Ora Mae Spann.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Rosa Mae Spann. Charles leaves to celebrate his life, his devoted wife, Barbara; daughter, Charlee Hill-Spann; sons, John Paul Hill-Spann, Ean Stokes; grandchild, Camello, and one expectant grandchild; sisters, Pauline (Edward) Cooke, Ann (Earl) Osborne; brothers, Robert (Karmen)Spann, Paul Anthony Spann, Norman Spann; mother- and father-in-law, Reginald and Emma Payne; several brothers- and sisters-in-law; special sister/friend, Shannon Doherty and special brother-sister/friends, Shawn and Shannon McCormick; along with many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other family members and friends, ALL of whom he loved dearly.
