Abe Hinton Jr. "Lil Abe or Bill”, was born in Pickensville, Alabama, the second of fourteen children to Abe and Queen E. Hinton on November 9, 1932.
Abe’s spiritual foundation was laid early at St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Pickensville. It was there, on the “moaning bench” during a revival meeting, that he confessed Christ and later was baptized. He then went on to serve his congregation on the usher's board.
Education carried Abe through the sixth grade in Pickensville, Alabama, where he attended Pickens County Training school/Rosenwald. In August 1953, he exchanged wedding vows with Isabella (Hall), and together they embarked on a 57-year journey that would shape their lives. Six children—Martha, Calvin, Melvin, Dorothy, Sharon, and Brutus—blessed their union.
Abe’s hands knew the soil as a farmer (sharecropper) in Alabama, but his dreams reached farther. In 1963, he relocated his family to Dayton, Ohio, seeking a better life. There, he secured a job at GHR Foundry, working tirelessly until the factory’s closure. Retirement didn’t slow him down; he continued to contribute by doing construction, mowing lawns, and fixing cars. Abe was a provider, a father figure to many, and a devoted community servant.
His partnership with Isabella was unwavering—a tag team that weathered life’s storms. Abe’s demeanor mirrored his quiet strength: soft-spoken yet resolute. He spoke his mind, and his actions followed suit. His passion lay in tinkering with cars, watching classic westerns, and reminiscing about older sitcoms. As a shade tree mechanic, he mastered the art of car repair, always willing to learn and adapt.
Over the course of his long life, Abe experienced loss. His wife of 57 years, daughter Martha Colvin, and son Calvin Hinton preceded him in death. His parents, brothers Joe and Perry Hinton, and sisters Alice Dancy and Elizabeth Murphy also left their indelible marks.
On June 13, 2024, Abe Hinton, Jr. departed this life at Hospice of Dayton, Ohio. His legacy endures—a man of quiet wisdom, unwavering commitment, and a love for both family and community.
