Schurrell Williams Obituary

Schurrell Williams, 72, a lifelong resident of Dayton, Ohio, died Sunday, December 1, 2019 at Miami Valley Hospital due to health complications from Alzheimer’s Disease.

Born and raised in Dayton, the son of Roosevelt and Sophia (Childress) Williams. He graduated from Dunbar High School in 1967. Mr. Williams retired from General Motors after 33 years of employment. In his early years, Mr. Williams would spend many hours in Mt. Olive Baptist Church singing with his brothers as a gospel group. He and his brothers received love and praise from the Mt. Olive congregation, and were encouraged to continue singing. Their beautiful harmonies could be heard at The Ebony Club, Central State, and numerous shows in the Dayton area. They were also known to spontaneously sing Gospel, Doo-Wop, and literally anything by The Temptations at family gatherings. His rich and expressive bass voice will be sorely missed.

Mr. Williams had a deep passion for art and design. He expressed his love for nature and the universe through surreal and impressionist oil paintings. Over the years, he shared his excitement for creativity with other artists in the Dayton area. He loved going to museums and art festivals. His passion for the intricacies of film is well known by family and friends. And he shared his knowledge of movies with all of us…for hours.

As a car enthusiast, Mr. Williams explored problem solving in car design by creating concept cars from sketch to finished clay and plastic models. He was also an avid car and van pin-striper. His creativity also extended to gardening and landscaping. He spent many years cultivating the plants, flowers, and trees in his front and back yards. Mr. Williams loved the natural world with all of his heart.

An avid runner, he was a frequent participation in 10k races in the Dayton area and the state of Ohio. He also enjoyed weekly distance running and bicycling to maintain health.

He is preceded in death by his father, Roosevelt Williams, and mother, Sophia (Childress) Williams; brother, Ray Williams; sisters, Darlene Evans, Dora Booker, and RoseAnn Dixon.

He is survived by his daughter, Anne, and her children, Ronald, Sean, Kelli, Kaci and grandsons, Jake, Ronald Jr., and Dallas; his son, Schurrell, and his daughter, Sela, and her mother, Elizabeth; sister, Olivia Richard; brothers, Tony Williams, Ronnie Williams, and Eddie Childress. He also leaves behind close friends and extended family that he loved and cared for deeply.
