Nancy Phillips Stokes

STOKES, Nancy Phillips, the beloved wife of the late A.M.E. Bishop Rembert E. Stokes (former president of Wilberforce University, beloved leader and mentor in the A.M.E. Church), transitioned January 17, 2018. Mrs. Stokes graduated from Fisk University in 1941, earned a master’s degree from Case Western Reserve University in 1945 and received an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters Degree from Paul Quinn College. She dedicated her life to enhancing the lives of others as a servant leader in education, health services, civic and professional organizations, and as a missionary supervisor in the 14^th, 18^th and 10^th Episcopal Districts of the A.M.E. Church. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Linda Stokes Smith (Robert) and Celeste Phillips Stokes McDermott, four grandchildren, niece, caring family and friends. A Service of Love and Celebration will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Holy Trinity A.M.E. Church, 1230 Wilberforce-Clifton Rd., Wilberforce, Ohio.  Visitation 9:00-11:00 a.m. Interment Massies Creek Cemetery, Cedarville, OH. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate a memorial donation to “Friends for Payne,” a support organization founded by Mrs. Stokes for Payne Theological Seminary.
