SAMSON (Atwater), Mrs. Dorothy B., known by her loved ones as “Dotty” or “Fats”, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, November 3, 2018. Dotty was born August 28, 1924 in Kay Springs, Georgia to Pastor Joshua and Laura (Stiles) Atwater, both went home to heaven at an early age, leaving Dorothy, the oldest, to continue raising her siblings. She married WJ “Jay” Samson, of Chicago, IL, on September 30, 1975, and he later died in May 2001. She worked at the Dayton V. A. Medical Center for over 21 years as a laundry attendant until she retired. Dorothy was a member of the Dakota Center Seniors Club for 17 years where she loved going on outings, bingo, and fellowshipping with her peers. Dorothy was a devoted member of Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church for years, under the shepherding of Samuel N. Winston, Sr., until she became too elderly to physically attend.
Dorothy’s hobbies were music, fishing, dancing, traveling and her passion was cooking for her family. She so loved her family from her heart. She never had children of her own, but she raised and nurtured her niece, Jencie M. Atwater, the daughter of her sister Mary, as her very own. Dorothy had so much love and compassion to give she tended to her sister Doris’s children, giving them love and guidance and support as an aunt/grandmother, encouraging them to love each other. Her compassion for nurturing care led to her becoming a foster care parent for Children Services in 1983. This gave her a full commitment of motherhood and love.
Preceded in death by her siblings, Johnny Atwater (Gladys), Amos Thomas Atwater (Della), Bessie Atwater, Mary Atwater, James Atwater, Thomas Ivey Atwater (Vera), Doris I. “Toppie” Atwater Camp.
She is survived by her brother, Edward Stiles Atwater (Nora-deceased); daughter, Jencie M. “PeeWee” Atwater; a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, foster children, loved ones and friends. She will forever be missed but not forgotten on earth. We will see you again on the great resurrection day.
