Velma Jean Mason

MASON, Velma Jean, age 76, of Huber Heights, OH, passed away Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at Hospice of Dayton. Velma was born November 29, 1940 in Chattanooga, TN. She graduated from Dunbar High School in 1958. She attended Canaan Missionary Baptist Church, until her illness, where she was a choir member. Velma was a member of the American Business Women’s Association where she was recognized as the 2016 Woman of the Year, and served on many committees. She retired from Miami Valley Hospital Dietary department with 34 years of service.  Preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Cornelia Mason; sister and brother-in-law, Willie Mae (Young) Busbee; brother, John Horton; nieces, Andrea Knight and Linda Tims. Velma leaves to cherish her memory her niece, Gloria Bowens of Huber Heights, OH; nephew, Gerald (Janie) Bowens of Burnsville, MN; niece, Cheryl (Courtlin) Hill of Reynoldsburg, OH; great niece, Lisa Johnstone of Huber Heights, OH; great nephew, Derek Bowens of Houston, TX; Godchildren, Shirley Mosley of Dayton, Brian Dunson of Huber Heights, OH, and Veronica Cunningham of Dayton; special cousins, Bob (Kathy) Hoskins, of Dayton, Gale John of Washington, D.C.; dear friend, Ann Franklin of Dayton; as well as many loving great nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. Funeral service will be held 11 am Thursday, June 8, 2017 at Canaan Missionary Baptist Church, 5191 Hoover Ave. Rev. Joseph L. Coleman officiating. Visitation 9 am Thursday at the church until time of service. Family will receive friends one hour prior to service.
