Philip was a proud native of Hazard, Kentucky (Perry County) and a resident of Dayton, Ohio for many years. Philip graduated from Eastern Kentucky University and was a charter member of Calvary Grace Brethren Church where he faithfully sang with the Men of Calvary and served as a Trustee until his death. After his notable service as a Senior Director with the Dayton-area YMCA, Philip retired and continued to serve his community as a parking attendant with PMI Associates and the Dayton Dragons. When he was not spending time with family or serving at church, Philip enjoyed cheering for the Kentucky Wildcats, the Cincinnati Reds, The University of Dayton Fliers, and his beloved Cleveland Browns.
Preceded in death by his parents, Elbert Thornton and Christine Thornton-Clayton, and his former wife, Patricia Anne Parks Thornton. Philip leaves three beloved children: sons, Jermaine (Sunni, and sons Noah and Luca) Thornton of Columbus, Ohio, and David Thornton of Houston, Texas, and daughter Victoria Thornton of Dayton, Ohio, to cherish his memory and continue his legacy of church and community service. Joining Philip’s three children is a host of beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews; his beloved Calvary Grace Brethren church family; and several special friends to mourn his passing and to celebrate his life and legacy.
