Marla K. McCleskey

MCCLESKEY, Marla Kaye, born July 16, 1954 in Dayton, the firstborn of five siblings, passed away February 13, 2017. She graduated from Belmont High School, Class of 1973. Marla attended Central State University and the University of the Cumberlands (formerly Cumberland College). She had several positions as an administrative assistant, until she began to work at the University of Dayton. Marla retired from the University of Dayton after 32 years of service. Marla accepted Christ at an early age. She was a faithful member of Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church where she served in the choir, part of the prison ministry team with Sis. Betty Hill and a faithful Sunday school and Oasis Bible Study participant. In 1985, Marla's life changed when she became guardian of her niece, Andrea McCleskey. Marla devoted her life to the care and well-being of Andrea. Despite strong opposition, Marla remained a fierce advocate for children with special needs and being a single parent. Marla had a quiet disposition, a strong spirit and loving nature. She donated to countless charities and organizations. Marla fought a good fight to the end and she will be missed! Preceded in death by her parents, Harvey Sr. and Henrietta McCleskey; sister Regina. She leaves to cherish her memory her niece, Andrea McCleskey; sister, Kristy (Reginald) Johnson, Dayton; brothers, Henry “Mickey” McCleskey (Lucy Lewis) of Richmond, VA, Harvey Jr. (Loi) McCleskey of Gahanna, OH; nieces and nephews, Starla (Eric), Joy, Kendra, Reggie, Jr., (Tannis), Alexandria, Karla, Caleb, Elijah, Meliah, Amayah, Shandi, Jaylen, Mychael, Reign, Tanner; devoted aunt/friend in Christ, Mrs. Margaret Spearman; devoted cousins, Annetta Clay, Joyce Oliver; a host of cousins, other relatives and friends. Funeral service 11 am Monday, February 20, 2017 at Mt. Calvary M. B. Church, 3375 W. Siebenthaler Ave. Evangelist Kristy Johnson officiating. Interment Woodland Cemetery. Visitation 9-11 am. Family will receive friends 10-11 am.
