David Richard Hairston, Sr.

HAIRSTON, Sr., Mr. David Richard “Dick”, age 88, born July 25, 1928 in Arlington, West Virginia, peacefully passed into eternal rest Thursday, April 27, 2017. Dick graduated from Stratton High School in Beckley, West Virginia followed by working in the coal mines of West Virginia. He moved to Dayton in 1955 to work for the U.S. Postal Service from which he retired after 30 years of service. He accepted Christ and was a faithful member of St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church. He served as an usher and was a loyal member of the Brotherhood of St. Andrews. Over the past 20 years, he cultivated close friendships with staff and other exercisers at Good Samaritan North Rehabilitation Center. Dick loved sports and in his younger years played on the Postal Service softball team. Preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Ockla Hairston; wife, Estella; siblings, Robert, Cecil, Edwin, Obediah, James, Sr., Roberta Smith and Helen Hannah. He leaves to cherish his memory sisters, Grace Barnes and Nona (Charles) Hairston; children, Sylvia (Emmett) Orr and David Jr. (Sharon) Hairston; grandchildren, Robin (Robert) Stevenson, Erica (Jeffrey) Cobin, Erron (Quanie) Orr and Devin Hairston; sisters-in-law, Evelyn and Arletha Hairston and Sylvia Tanks; mother of his children, Frances Robinson; a host of other relatives and friends. Service 11 am Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 5301 Free Pike. Fr. Benjamin Speare-Hardy II officiating. Visitation 9 am Tuesday at the church until time of service. Family will receive friends one hour prior to service. Interment West Memory Gardens. Arrangements entrusted to the House of Wheat Funeral Home, Inc., 2107 N. Gettysburg Ave. The family would like to thank all the nurses and staff at Stone Springs Transitional Care Center and Hospice of Dayton. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Margaret’s Brotherhood of St. Andrews or Hospice of Dayton.
